Dr. Philip Schoenfeld MD

Dr. Philip Schoenfeld - Gastroenterology Researcher and Mentor

With numerous publications, from research studies to book chapters, to his credit, Philip Schoenfeld, MD, serves as chief (emeritus) of the Gastroenterology (GI) Section at the John D. Dingell Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Detroit. He is also editor-in-chief of the American College of Gastroenterology publication Evidence-Based GI. Philip Schoenfeld, MD, and his team select leading edge clinical GI research published in general medicine journals and present it to the GI medical community.

For many years, Dr. Schoenfeld served as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) and VA-funded clinical researcher, focusing his efforts in areas such as colonoscopy and methods of improving colorectal cancer screening quality. He also brought new insight into colon cancer family history and its impact on adenoma development and guidelines for screening. His background extends to a role as associate chief, Department of Internal Medicine, with the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served as Staff Gastroenterologist on the Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort in the late 1990s.

As chairman and founder of EBMed, Dr. Schoenfeld leads a nonprofit focused on GI education and providing women and underrepresented minorities with mentoring and continuing medical education opportunities in the academic GI sphere. He has facilitated well-attended events that bring together diverse practitioners, including EBMed's Great GI Debates.
